I purchased the quick release pin and a few other parts separately, and Amazon gave me a discount, so I will not let that effect my review otherwise, but its worth noting**Installation takes for ever. I’m a fairly competent weekend warrior mechanic, and this took me a couple hours to get the torque specs right, adjust, readjust, etc.. Directions are terrible (mine were torn). If you use common sense, they eventually become coherent.The idea behind this product is brilliant. Its one of just a few out there that will let your child ride his/her bike and then reconnect them when they get tired. I didn’t want a Follow-Me product because they cant ride independently. Love the idea of this, but its a little on the cheap side and flimsy.Lots of folks complained about the part that connects to the child’s bike frame coming lose and turning. I stuck anti-slip rubber pieces under and torqued to spec with a torque wrench and I didn’t have any issues. However, I do have the leaning issue that many complain about. I’ve read that if you change the rotation of the seat post connection piece that should minimize or eliminate the lean. I have had little luck after readjusting a few times. I’ll give it a go once more, but I think its just a matter of fact with these.Either way, both my 3 year old and 5 year old boys love riding behind me. We just took this on the Peddlers’ Jamboree in Iowa (22 miles each way) and they had a blast. The lean is a little annoying and can make steering a little awkward for the parent. I hit the gravel a couple times because my kids were leaning back and forth (intentionally). They didn’t complain about it being uncomfortable or annoying, but its there. Its less pronounced with the lighter child.Its quick and easy to switch from towing to independent riding. Just undo a few quick release pins and you can switch in 2 min flat. No problem and I’m impressed at how easy it is, and how well it stays put on my bike when not in use.With that said, we’re keeping it. Not the best, but fun and works well enough. |
| Color | Purchased this product hoping to use it as a bridge between the bike that my daughter will be able to ride but not quite ready to ride. Did not want to waste money on a tandem which we would only use for a short period of time and then have to get rid of. Found out very quickly that it works reasonably well if the child can already balance themself (my 8-y/o son) but is very dangerous if they are still training wheel dependent (my 6-y/o daughter). Every time they lean to one side or the other it causes the whole system to sway which is unpredictable and difficult to manage… Especially if you’re trying to ride on the street. This might be a reasonable option if your child is capable of riding a bike but you’re not comfortable with them going on rides with you through the city or other such locations. It might also be feasible if you’re riding on an isolated bike trail. I definitely would not recommend it anywhere that cars are present until the child is capable of riding on their own. |
| Material | We bought the Trail-Gator a couple of years ago, but I didn;t post a review until I accidentally came across this product again and noticed few negative posts.I have to admit that initially we did have few issues and, unfortunately, had to figure out the best way to mount it based on the trial and error, as opposed to relying on the enclosed documentation. I think this is where the manufacturer should improve.I believe most of the problems with the mounts can be solved by wrapping a layer or two of the rubber strips cut out from the old tire tubes around the head tube of the kid’s bicycle both on the bracket and the screws side, and making sure the screws are very very tight.Eventually this worked great for us and my child and I are very happy and satisfied with the product. We are certainly a lot more confident now when planning longer trips knowing that if the hills or the distance is too much for my child’s 16″ single speed bike, we can always attach it and turn into a tandem.I think this is a good product, and I do recommend it to anyone, just be prepared to spend some time figuring out the best way to fit it.The documentation won’t be of much help. It’s not a ‘rocket science’, but, unless something changed, it doesn’t come with IKEA-like step-by-step instructions.The bracket comes with several inserts that can help you with adjusting the height of the front wheel of the attached bike. So, this should fit a number of different combinations of the parent and child bikes geometries and sizes.Also, make sure to take it easy on the first few rides until you’re confident the mounting bracket is attached securely to your child’s bike and does not slide. |

When we had him in one of those baby seats that attach to the back of my seat, he would get bored after about 20 minutes. If he were riding his bike solo, we would be moving at the speed of smell. With the trail gator,we can cover a lot of ground, he is able to pedal and hold the handle bars. He feels like he is riding bikes with us. It’s great! No quality issues with the product after 70 miles. I’m happy. |
