| Model Number | While some reviewer’s said the cart was great for hauling stuff to the beach, I did not find that to be the case. The cart is too narrow to lay chairs flat, and the side rails are not high enough to support chairs standing on their sides or ends. However… For under $25 for PVC and fittings and a 2‘ x 3‘ piece of 1/2” plywood… I was able to “MacGyver” the cart to meet my needs. I used 1/2” stainless steel screws to hold the PVC joints together rather than glue so that my cart is collapsible too! Took it to the beach with six chairs, a boogie board, a beach umbrella, a portable folding table, and a backpack type of yeti cooler. No problem pulling it with my beach cruiser. I only drilled one hole for the entire project! That was in the connector arm between the two brackets where it hooks to the cart itself. I drilled a 3/8” hole in the connector arm so that I could drop a cable lock through there to lock the cart to my bike if we leave it on the boardwalk and carry the stuff down to the beach. |

Those are the two main purposes for which I purchased this Burley trailer.I went through the extensive listing of bike trailers on Amazon and read the reviews to see others’ experiences. This trailer may be pricey compared to many others but I really do think you get what you pay for as far as bike trailers go. A trailer needs to be able to take on a variety of road conditions without breaking in the blink of an eye.I purchased the Burley flatbed trailer due to its versatility. I didn’t want a trailer that already had a cover on it or was a box with four sides. I wanted to be able to configure my load however I see fit. Happily, I have been able to do that. I generally use two large covered plastic tubs that I tie down with standard bungee cords (see pictures). There are plenty of metal parts on the trailer that you can hook the cords onto. These tubs are pretty large (I don’t recall the exact size because I took the labels off a long time ago) but they are the deep sizable ones you can get at the big box store. I was surprised that I could get two on here. The trailer actually fits more than it would seem from the product picture.The trailer itself is well built. It is extremely light. I can lift the empty trailer with ease and set it down wherever. An especially nice feature is that the wheels are heavy duty and are set apart from the sides of the trailer. I kept seeing the comment in a lot of other trailer reviews that the wheel was so close to the fabric of the trailer that the wheel would rub the fabric and put holes in it almost immediately. That is definitely not the case here. The wheels are inches away from the fabric and the fabric is actually a strong, outdoor type of fabric. It’s not chintzy. The directions to assemble the trailer are pretty clear. Some of the diagrams took a bit to study and figure out but quite honestly, the trailer is not complicated and much of it is pretty intuitive. It is held together mostly by solid metal cotter pins that are designed in such a way that they aren’t coming out very easily once you put them in. Just using the trailer won’t knock these things out of place. You really need to manhandle them to get them out again.I have used the trailer twice – once to ride to the grocery store and once to ride to a campground site. Both times I have used my Giant Liv 29″ mountain bike. It should be noted that this trailer will only work with bikes that have a removable back wheel. The way the trailer attaches is by removing the axle that holds your wheel to the bike frame and then reinserting the axle through the trailer hitch and back through the wheel. It is easy to attach and everything you need comes with the trailer already. I do have a beach cruiser that I would like to use with the trailer but it doesn’t have this wheel setup so I’ll need to jury rig something for that. Also, it is worth taking a look at the Burley website. Burley has a bunch of different accessories to make your life easier and might be able to help you adapt to your particular bike situation.The grocery store trip is my main grocery shopping which means I get everything for the week, not just a few essentials. As such, I buy a pretty good load – I would say 30-40 pounds. Because I get cold things as well, I put a small cooler in one of the plastic bins and that kept everything cold. The road to the grocery store is 3 miles with about 2 1/2 miles asphalt, and a 1/2 mile of gravel. On the way there with the bins empty, I didn’t even know the trailer was on my bike. I would hear the plastic containers bump into each other every once in a while but other than that, I didn’t even know the trailer was there. On the way back was a different story since it is uphill. I could feel that the trailer was loaded but that is more a function of my cardiovascular fitness (or lack thereof) than anything having to do with the trailer :).For the campground, I went to a local campground in a state forest so the campground is pretty developed. By that, I mean it has dirt trails already built without a lot of obstacles to your destination. I biked to the campground which is about 20 miles away by asphalt road and then up a dirt trail about 2 miles to my campsite. Again, I didn’t know the trailer was there (except for the added weight) on the asphalt road. On the dirt road, I could tell that I was hauling something behind me, but again, that has nothing to do with the trailer. On both the asphalt and dirt roads, the trailer runs smooth. It isn’t bouncing up and down, even when it is empty with just the two plastic tubs. By way of reference, I packed the following on the trailer to go camping and all of it fit: one-person pup tent, cooler with food and ice, 2 changes of clothing for biking, 1 change of casual camping clothing, one camping mess kit for eating, first aid kit, sleeping bag, rain gear, towel, non-bike shoes and toiletries. I provide the list just to show that you can use this for extended camping trips.For storage, you can take the trailer partially to make it flat for storing. I happen to keep mine together because I have a stall for it in my garage and don’t need to do that. I’m very satisfied with this trailer and have confidence that it will keep up with me. |
| Material | Welp, I guess it’s been long enough now that I can write an honest review. I’m using this thing to move a lot of heavy boxes of electronics parts and oscilloscopes and rolls of carpet and stuff, about 1 mile from my old shop to my new shop, along the pitted and pock marked “streets” of industrial San Jose, California.So far, this thing’s a beast! No problem carrying things at or near its 100 lb load capacity, like any Burley except for the weight it’s un-notice-able on the bike, and it’s held up well. I’ve lost one of the black decorative rubber covers over the hub, and somehow I’ve managed to get a small hole punched in the fabric on the bottom. I’ll probably use some kind of vinyl patch on that, and I’ve put a thick piece of cardboard on the bottom to keep, hopefully, more of that from happening.Assembly was surprisingly easy, and it’s helpful to know the way this is put together, the vinyl is stretched across the bottom so there will be some tension when you put the 2nd side up. As for the wheels, I checked to make sure the rim bands were in place, and then put “Slime” in the tubes, because that stuff is a must around here.Basically is was a choice between a hunkajunk used trailer from my local bike shop which they wanted $150 for, or this for $200 and change, delivered. If you’re in the market for a cargo trailer, you’re probably going to be looking at ones made to carry kids because that’s all your local store is going to have. You can take one of those and turn it into a cargo trailer, the homeless folks around here do that all the time. But if you want a good cargo trailer without a lot of time fussing around and have the dough, this is the best. |
